Natel Energy Inc. is seeking an engineer with experience in controls or systems theory, software development, and electronics. Natel’s innovative low head, fish-safe hydro turbines rely on modern industrial control systems and sensors, as well as open source data streaming, storage and analysis tools to function efficiently and competitively. You will specify, design, implement, test, and mature these systems as part of Natel’s Product Development Team.

A strong applicant shows close attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a high degree of initiative. Software and hardware experience is required, although familiarity with specific platforms, programming languages, or technologies is not necessary. Key to this position is the ability to solve problems methodically and creatively, and to communicate the results effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
In this role, your responsibilities and growth areas will include, but are not limited to:
- Developing, managing, and maintaining PLC automation code for our plants and test systems, including implementation of best practices from the (non-industrial) software development space, such as version control and automatic testing pipelines
- Gaining a deep understanding of industrial sensing, actuation, and fieldbus systems and their electrical and software interfaces to build robust and reliable autonomous power generation stations
- Designing turbine control algorithms, creating dynamic simulations of electromechanical systems to test these algorithms, then validating and improving the results with lab and field testing
- Using open source and proprietary tools for analysis and synthesis of turbine data from field operations, performance testing, and lab testing. Particular focus is on improving condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and fault tracing
You probably have a BS/MS in Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or Robotics (or equivalent experience) and have received your degree within the last few years.
