Our technology
The concept
The hydroEngineTM is a unique hydropower turbine which offers a cost-effective alternative to conventional technologies at drops less than 20 feet tall. The design originated from a desire to create a low-cost, easy-to-install technology that would work efficiently in large flow, low pressure settings. Natel's vision is to enable efficient, cost-effective utilization of water to produce energy while maintaining conditions that sustain or improve water resources for ecosystems, for human consumption, for agriculture, and for recreation.
How it works
The hydroEngineTM machine design combines the low cost characteristics of simple, easy-to-manufacture impulse blades with the high specific speeds necessary for efficient low head application. The hydroEngineTM operates by transferring energy from falling water impacting a series of horizontal blades to a powertrain that rotates around an upper and lower shaft. A generator is connected to one or both of the shafts and synchronized with the grid through a SCADA-compliant control system. Engine components can be fabricated without expensive machining and are assembled into a removable cassette that provides easy access for maintenance and servicing.
Water-to-wire systems
Natel provides complete water-to-wire systems featuring the hydroEngineTM technology. The system package includes:
- The SLH unit, including the housing and water intake
- Outflow link to the draft tube
- Generator
- Switchgear
- SCADA compliant controls
- Rivers have what man most respects and longs for in his own life and thoughts—a capacity for renewal and replenishment, continual energy, creativity, cleansing.
