Innovation in hydropower
The opportunity
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 55% of renewable energy added globally through 2035 will come from hydropower. In the United States alone there is an estimated 166 GW of undeveloped hydropower potential, of which 71 GW resides in drops of less than 30 feet (9 meters) in height.
Our technology
Natel's hydroEngineTM is the only technology of its kind: A fully flooded, two-stage impulse hydropower turbine designed specifically for drops between 5 and 20 feet (2 and 6 meters). The hydroEngineTM technology is available in five unit sizes and may be implemented in constructed waterways as well as natural streams and rivers.
In manmade conduits such as irrigation canals and wastewater outfalls, Natel's smaller and medium-sized units can easily be adapted to existing dam and weir structures and can generate between 50 and 500 kW of power per unit. With a rated capacity of 2 MW per system, larger units may be installed in streams and rivers in run-of-river configurations to produce many megawatts of power at a cost per kilowatt-hour competitive with that of fossil fuels.

What we do
Natel Energy provides water-to-wire hydropower systems featuring the hydroEngineTM technology. Natel also provides project feasibility and design services, working with qualified electrical and civil engineering firms, regulatory consultants and project development partners to assist with customers' project development processes as needed.
Who we're working with
We are currently working with irrigation and municipal water districts, project developers, and electric utilities in the United States and abroad.
